The Gay-I Verdict

Gay-I Reading: 57%

The Gay-I Annual Dad Report 2026 finds that dads are wearing more linen, attending more brunch, and owning more houseplants than in any year on record, while cargo shorts held steady. None of these trends can tell you whether any particular dad is gay. They mostly tell you that dads went on vacation.

Every year, the Gay-I Research Desk gathers everything it has learned about dads and puts it in a single report. This is the first year we have done this, so "every year" is aspirational.

The figures below come from Gay-I submissions, our own Research Library, and one researcher's notes from a cul-de-sac in Ohio. The methodology is described at the end, briefly, because there is not much of it.

Key Findings: Dad Trends in 2026

Our researchers identified six findings they consider significant. They are listed here in the order we remembered them.

  • Linen is up. Linen shirt sightings rose 34% over last year. Most were described as "breathable." Full analysis in Questionable Fabrics.
  • Cargo shorts are holding steady. No change. Cargo shorts have not changed since 1998, and we do not expect them to.
  • Brunch hit a record high. For the first time, more dads attended brunch than mowed before 10 a.m. on a Saturday. See Brunch as a Leading Indicator.
  • Houseplants are growing. One in five dads now owns a plant he refers to by name. Background in The Fiddle-Leaf Fig Threshold.
  • Musical theatre exposure is stable but intense. Dads who saw one musical this year saw an average of 2.6 more. See the Dad Musical Theatre Spectrum.
  • The lawn remains the leading form of emotional expression. No other category came close. See The Lawn as a Love Language.

Dad Signals of the Year

Each signal below is scored on the Gay-I's standard five-point scale, with a note on where it is headed. Movement is measured against last year, which we did not measure, so we estimated.

SignalGay-I StrengthNotes
Linen shirtsUp 34%. Most were acquired on vacation and worn at home to remember the vacation.
Small dogsUp. Many were "your mother's dog" at purchase. That arrangement has ended. See Small Dogs, Big Questions.
Aperol spritzUp sharply, driven by one trip to Italy per household.
Bottomless brunchRecord high. Several dads asked the server what "bottomless" covers.
MoisturizerRising. Most dads borrowed it first and bought their own later. See Is It Gay to Moisturize?
Golf tripsSteady. Still just golf, as far as we know.
Cargo shortsFlat. Pocket count unchanged at six.

Dad Trends to Watch in 2027

Our researchers have spotted early signals that may become full trends next year. We are flagging them now so we can say we called it.

  • The sweater over the shoulders, tied loosely at the chest, moving from country clubs into regular backyards.
  • Dads saying "fabulous" about a sandwich without any apparent irony.
  • Dad yoga, currently in a phase our researchers describe as "mostly the lying down part."
  • Cologne replacing body spray in households where body spray was previously the only option. See Cologne vs. Body Spray.

Methodology

Data was collected from Gay-I submissions. Because photos are not stored, most figures were recorded from memory. The remaining figures were estimated. Several were made up, but they feel right.

The Gay-I is accurate 50% of the time, every time, and the same applies to this report. Nothing in it can tell you whether a real dad is gay; it can only tell you that dads, as a group, have discovered linen. To add your dad to next year's sample, upload a photo of him.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Gay-I Annual Dad Report?

It is a yearly summary of dad trends from the Gay-I Research Desk. 2026 is the first edition. The findings are satirical and the statistics are mostly invented.

Are dads wearing more linen in 2026?

According to our report, linen shirt sightings rose 34%. We made that number up, but our researchers have seen a lot of linen this year.

Are cargo shorts still popular with dads?

Yes. Cargo shorts held steady in 2026, as they have every year since they were introduced. The Gay-I does not expect this to change in our lifetime.

Does liking brunch mean my dad is gay?

No. Brunch is a meal. Record dad brunch attendance tells us that dads like eggs at 11 a.m., which is reasonable.

Where does the data in the Annual Dad Report come from?

Gay-I submissions, our Research Library, and estimates. Photos are not stored, so much of it is from memory, and some of it is from a cul-de-sac in Ohio.

The joke is on stereotypes, not on anyone's dad. Nothing on this page can tell you anything about a real person's sexuality. If your dad has actually come out, start here instead.
