Is a Sweater Tied Over the Shoulders Gay? What It Means When Dad Does It
There is a sweater on Dad's shoulders. His arms are not in it. We have been asked to explain.

The Gay-I Verdict
Gay-I Reading: 71%No, tying a sweater over your shoulders is not gay. It is a preppy style that has been around for about a hundred years, and it says nothing about anyone's sexuality. The Gay-I does consider it a strong signal that Dad has been looking at catalogs, and it rates the knot accordingly.
Most dads, when they get cold, put on a sweater. When they get warm, they take it off and leave it on the back of a chair at a restaurant, and someone has to go back for it.
A small but growing number of dads have found a third option. They take the sweater off, drape it across their back, and tie the sleeves loosely in front of their chest. The sweater is now neither on nor off. The Gay-I Research Desk has spent the last several weeks trying to understand why.
Where the Shoulder Sweater Comes From
Our researchers traced the look back to three places, in roughly this order.
- The country club: Men in the early 1900s wore sweaters for tennis and golf and took them off between sets. Tying them on was easier than holding them. This is the only purely practical origin we found.
- The yacht: It is windy on a boat, then it is not windy, then it is windy again. A sweater on the shoulders is ready for all three. Most dads who wear the look have never been on a yacht.
- The catalog: In the 1980s, clothing catalogs began photographing men on docks and lawns with a sweater knotted over a polo shirt. Dads saw these catalogs on the kitchen counter for twenty years. It was only a matter of time.
When the Sweater Is Just About Being Cold
In fairness to Dad, sometimes there is a real reason. He went to an outdoor dinner. The sun went down. He did not want to carry the sweater, and he did not want to forget it on a chair again, because last time it was his good one.
In these cases the knot is usually tight, a little off-center, and he will put the sweater on properly within the hour. The Gay-I scores this as low as a 1. It is functionally a backpack.
When It Is Something Else
Other times, the sweater is not doing anything. It is 81 degrees. There is no breeze. Dad has been wearing the sweater on his shoulders since he left the house, and he has no plans to put it on.
Our researchers identified a few details that push the reading higher. The sweater is a pastel, usually pale yellow, pink, or a blue he calls "periwinkle." The knot is loose and centered. He adjusts it when he sees his reflection in a car window. And he is wearing it over a polo, which means he is now wearing two shirts and only one of them has his arms in it.
Shoulder sweater dads are 50% more likely to also be planning a golf trip with the guys. We made that number up, but it feels right.
The Waist Variant
Some dads tie the sweater around the waist instead. Our researchers debated whether this counts.
We concluded that it does not, mostly. The waist tie has been worn by middle schoolers, hikers, and every parent at every theme park since the invention of the theme park. It is a carrying method. It does not say "catalog." It says "we are going to be in line for Space Mountain for ninety minutes." The Gay-I rates it a 1 and a half, which is not a number it is allowed to give, but it gave it anyway.
What a Sweater on the Shoulders Actually Means
It means Dad is either a little cold or a little stylish, and on some evenings both. That is all a sweater can tell you. Sexuality does not live in the knot, and plenty of straight dads have been wearing this look since the Reagan administration.
For more on what is happening in Dad's closet, see our field guide to questionable fabrics, especially if the sweater is cashmere. Or skip the reading entirely and upload a photo of him so the Gay-I can examine the knot itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it gay to tie a sweater around your shoulders?
No. It is a preppy style that dates back about a century to tennis courts and country clubs. Men of all orientations wear it.
Why does my dad wear a sweater over his shoulders?
Usually because he might get cold later and does not want to carry it. Sometimes because he saw it in a catalog and liked how it looked. Both are fine.
What does it mean when a guy ties a sweater around his waist?
It means he took his sweater off and needed somewhere to put it. The Gay-I considers the waist tie a carrying method, not a style choice.
Is the sweater over the shoulders look still in style?
It comes and goes. Our researchers have seen it on runways and at backyard barbecues in the same summer, which suggests it is never fully in or out.
Can the way someone wears a sweater tell you if they are gay?
No. A sweater tells you about the weather and someone's taste. It cannot tell you who a person loves, no matter how the sleeves are tied.
The joke is on stereotypes, not on anyone's dad. Nothing on this page can tell you anything about a real person's sexuality. If your dad has actually come out, start here instead.
