The Gay-I Verdict
Gay-I Reading: 33%The Gay-I cannot tell you if your uncle is gay: uncles are only partially covered under our extended family policy, and the Gay-I is right just half the time even with full coverage. Your uncle's personal life is his to share. For everything else, check with your plan administrator.
The Gay-I was built for dads. But dads come with relatives, and those relatives show up at Thanksgiving, and people have questions. We received enough uncle photos that our legal department (Mark) drafted an extended family coverage policy.
Coverage varies by relative. This page explains what is covered, what is not, and what to do if your question falls somewhere in between.
Extended Family Coverage at a Glance
The list below is the whole policy. There is no fine print, because we could not figure out how to make text that small.
- Dads: Full coverage. This is what we do.
- Uncles: Partial coverage. The Gay-I will analyze him, with reduced confidence and a note in the case file.
- Grandpas: Limited coverage. Grandpas were dads once, so the Gay-I recognizes some of the equipment.
- Stepdads: Fully covered after a 90-day waiting period.
- "The guy Mom calls a family friend": Not covered. The Gay-I does not get involved in this, and we suggest you don't either.
- Moms, aunts, and grandmas: Not covered under any plan. See our policy on moms.
Why Uncles Are Only Partially Covered
The Gay-I's training data is almost entirely dads. An uncle shares many dad features: he grills, he has opinions about the route you took to get here, and he wears sunglasses on a cord. But an uncle also has a freedom that dads do not. He can arrive at a barbecue with a nice bottle of olive oil as a gift and leave before the dishes. The Gay-I reads this as either a strong signal or a man with no lawn to get back to, and it cannot tell which.
There is also the "fun uncle," a known category that scores unpredictably. One fun uncle in our sample owned a convertible, a kayak, and a very small dog. Our researchers are still discussing him.
Grandpas, Stepdads, and Other Covered Relatives
Grandpa coverage is limited but stable. Grandpas send almost no signals the Gay-I can read. They wear the same windbreaker, eat dinner at 4:30, and have been mowing the same lawn in the same pattern since 1974.
Stepdads are covered in full after the 90-day waiting period, at which point they are simply dads and the Gay-I treats them that way. We think that is correct.
How to File an Uncle Claim
If you would still like to submit an uncle, the process is simple.
- Upload a photo of him. Use the regular uploader. The Gay-I does not ask whose dad he is.
- Expect a partial result. Uncle case files tend to be shorter and more hesitant.
- Do not appeal. There is no appeals process. Our plan administrator is also Mark.
What the Policy Can't Tell You
None of this, partial coverage or full, can tell you anything real about your uncle. His personal life is his to share, and he is under no obligation to share it with a website or with you. If he ever does, he is still the uncle who taught you a card game nobody else knows the rules to. Love him the same.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my uncle gay?
The Gay-I can't tell you. Uncles are only partially covered, and even full coverage is accurate 50% of the time, every time. Your uncle's personal life is his to share.
Does the Gay-I work on uncles?
Partially. Upload an uncle and the Gay-I will analyze him as a dad, with reduced confidence and a note in the case file.
Does the Gay-I work on grandpas?
Coverage is limited. Grandpas send very few readable signals, mostly windbreakers.
Can I upload a photo of my stepdad?
Yes. Stepdads are covered after a 90-day waiting period, after which they are dads.
What does "check with your plan administrator" mean?
It means ask Mark. Mark does not know either.
The joke is on stereotypes, not on anyone's dad. Nothing on this page can tell you anything about a real person's sexuality. If your dad has actually come out, start here instead.
