Is My Dad Gay Based on His Shoes? The Dad Shoe Index

Every dad starts in the same white walking sneaker. Some of them stay there. We measured the ones who left.

The Gay-I Verdict

Gay-I Reading: 48%

No, a dad's shoes cannot tell you if he is gay. What shoes can tell you is how far he has drifted from the chunky white walking sneaker that serves as the baseline of American fatherhood, and the Gay-I tracks that distance closely. Loafers worn without socks are the highest reading we have recorded.

Scientists have long agreed that there is one shoe of fatherhood. It is white, it is leather, it is roughly the size of a loaf of bread, and it is called the New Balance 608. Dads receive it at the hospital along with the baby. It is worn to mow, to grill, to Home Depot, and to a nice restaurant if the restaurant is Olive Garden.

For this study, the Gay-I Research Desk treated the 608 as zero and measured everything else against it. Our researchers looked at a lot of shoes. Some of them were in the house. Some of them had been hidden in the trunk of the car.

The Dad Shoe Index: Every Shoe Ranked

Each shoe was scored by the Gay-I on a five-point scale, based on its distance from the baseline sneaker and how much Dad talks about it.

SignalGay-I StrengthNotes
White walking sneaker (the 608)The baseline. Grass stains on the toe confirm normal operation.
Crocs with the strap forwardComfort mode. He is going to the mailbox and nowhere else.
Crocs with the strap back ("sport mode")He is preparing for something. Usually a cookout. Possibly a theme park.
Boat shoesAcceptable if he owns a boat. Most dads in boat shoes do not own a boat.
Chelsea bootsHe says they are "easy on, easy off." He has also started cuffing his jeans.
White leather sneakers, kept very cleanHe owns a small brush for them. He uses the brush.

Are Boat Shoes and Crocs Gay?

Boat shoes are the most confusing shoe in our dataset. They were designed for the deck of a sailboat, and most of the dads wearing them are standing in a Costco parking lot. Our researchers believe the boat shoe represents a kind of aspiration. Dad is not on a boat, but he would like to be, and he would like you to know that he would like to be.

Crocs, meanwhile, are the safest non-608 shoe a dad can own. The key variable is the strap. With the strap flipped forward over the toe, a Croc is a slipper with holes in it. With the strap flipped back behind the heel, Dad has entered what the industry calls "sport mode," and he intends to move quickly. In over 200 observed cases, he did not move quickly.

Loafers Without Socks: The Highest Reading on the Index

Most dads wear tube socks pulled up to the midpoint of the shin. A dad who puts on loafers and leaves the socks in the drawer is choosing to show his ankles to the public. The Gay-I considers this a significant development.

In most cases he is not actually sockless. He is wearing a tiny invisible sock called a "no-show," which he will explain to you at length if asked. He bought a 12-pack. They keep slipping off his heel. He has not given up.

  • Loafers with dress socks: He has a work dinner. This is fine.
  • Loafers with no-show socks: He has been reading about men's style on his phone at night.
  • Loafers with no socks at all: A summer wedding, a trip to Italy, or both.
  • Velvet loafers: The Gay-I paused for several seconds and then asked if we could come back to this one.

White Leather Sneakers and Chelsea Boots

A clean white leather sneaker looks a little like a 608 from across the yard. Up close it is a different animal. It is slimmer. It has no visible padding. It is not for mowing. A dad who owns one will step around a puddle to protect it, which is the first time anyone in the family has seen him step around anything.

Chelsea boots are similar. Dad will tell you he bought them because they slip on and off, which is also true of the 608 if you never untie the laces, and he never does. We noted that Chelsea boot dads are 30% more likely to say the word "versatile" about a piece of clothing. We made that number up, but it feels right.

What Your Dad's Shoes Actually Mean

Very little. Shoes tell you where a man is going and how much he wants his feet to hurt when he gets there. They cannot tell you who he loves. Plenty of straight dads wear sockless loafers, and plenty of gay dads have a pair of grass-stained 608s by the back door.

If you want a second opinion anyway, you can upload a photo of him and the Gay-I will take a look, ideally with the shoes in frame. You can also compare his footwear to what he is doing with his shorts and his sunglasses, or go back to the source with our guide to questionable fabrics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it gay for a guy to wear loafers without socks?

No. It is a style that a lot of men wear in warm weather. The Gay-I does rate it as the furthest a dad can get from the white walking sneaker, but that is a measurement of distance, not orientation.

What shoes do straight dads wear?

According to our research, a white leather walking sneaker with a thick sole, usually purchased in 2014 and replaced with the exact same model in 2022.

What does it mean when my dad puts his Crocs in sport mode?

It means he flipped the strap behind his heel because he expects to move faster than usual. In our observations, he rarely does.

My dad started cleaning his white sneakers. Should I be worried?

No. He likes his sneakers and wants them to stay nice. The Gay-I notes it, but taking care of your belongings is not a sign of anything except taking care of your belongings.

Can you tell if someone is gay by their shoes?

No. Shoes tell you about comfort, climate, and how often someone has been to a wedding lately. Sexuality does not show up on footwear.

The joke is on stereotypes, not on anyone's dad. Nothing on this page can tell you anything about a real person's sexuality. If your dad has actually come out, start here instead.
