Is My Dad Gay If He Never Skips Leg Day? A Frequency Study

For years, Dad went to the gym and did the same two exercises. Then he met Marco.

The Gay-I Verdict

Gay-I Reading: 53%

Never skipping leg day does not mean your dad is gay. It means he has a balanced workout plan, which is more than most dads can say. The Gay-I only takes notes when he starts washing his own shaker bottle without being asked.

The classic dad workout has two exercises: bench press and bicep curls. He does them on Monday. He does them again on Thursday if work is slow. He has never done a squat on purpose, and he walks down stairs sideways for two days after helping someone move.

In the last few years, our researchers have seen a change. Dads are going to the gym more often, for longer, and with a plan. Some of them have a trainer. A few of them are doing leg day. We tracked how often, and what else came with it.

The Baseline: Bench Press and Curls Only

The bench-and-curls dad is our control group. His upper body is strong. His legs have been the same since high school. He calls his gym "the Y" even if it is not the Y.

He is not worried about this. When asked about leg day, most baseline dads said their legs "get plenty of work" from walking to the car. The Gay-I accepts this answer and gives him a score of zero.

Leg Day Frequency, Ranked

We sorted dads by how often they train legs and what that seems to say about their week. The Gay-I scored each pattern on its usual five-point scale.

Never does leg dayThe baseline. His legs are a mystery to him.

Washes his own shaker bottleUnprecedented. Our researchers had to sit down.

The Personal Trainer Named Marco

In our sample, a surprising number of dads with personal trainers had a trainer named Marco. We cannot explain this. It may be the same Marco. He may be very busy.

You can tell a dad has a Marco because Marco gets quoted at dinner. "Marco says I need to engage my core." "Marco says sleep is part of training." Dad has started drinking more water and going to bed earlier, and the whole family is benefiting from Marco without ever meeting him. The Gay-I considers Marco a positive influence. We would like to meet Marco ourselves.

Protein Shakes and the Shaker Bottle He Washes Himself

Most dads who drink protein shakes leave the shaker bottle in the car, in the gym bag, or on the counter for a few days. Anyone who has opened one of those bottles knows why this matters.

The dad who rinses his shaker bottle immediately after use, takes out the little wire ball, and sets everything upside down in the dish rack to dry is a different kind of dad. He has a routine and he respects it. This is the highest single reading in our study, and to be clear, the Gay-I gave it a 5 out of 5 because it was so surprising, not because it means anything. What Dad's Workout Actually Tells You

A workout plan tells you what a person wants their body to be able to do. It does not tell you who they are attracted to. Strong legs, glute work, and a clean shaker bottle are signs of a dad who has gotten organized, and nothing more.

If you would like a reading anyway, you can upload a photo of him after the gym and let the Gay-I take a look. For other weekend activities that dads take seriously, see our golf trip risk assessment or our yoga file, is my dad gay if he does yoga.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it gay if my dad never skips leg day?

No. It means he follows a balanced workout. Personal trainers generally recommend training legs, and Marco certainly does.

Why does my dad only do bench press and curls?

Those are the exercises he learned in high school, and they are the ones you can see in a t-shirt. This is the most common dad workout in our research.

What does it mean when my dad suddenly gets into glute workouts?

It usually means a trainer or a video told him strong glutes help his back. They do. He will want to show you a hip thrust.

My dad has a personal trainer and talks about him a lot. Should I be worried?

No. People quote their trainers all the time, especially when the advice works. If he is sleeping better and drinking more water, the trainer is doing his job.

Can how someone works out tell you if they are gay?

No. A workout routine says what someone wants from the gym. It does not say anything about their sexuality.

The joke is on stereotypes, not on anyone's dad. Nothing on this page can tell you anything about a real person's sexuality. If your dad has actually come out, start here instead.
